Olivia is the mother of the Crain family and is loving, compassionate, and deeply affected by the supernatural events that took place at Hill House. Olivia is shown to have a strong connection to the house and becomes increasingly unstable as she is affected by its malevolent influence.

Steven Crain

Steven is the eldest child of the Crain family and is a successful author who writes about his experiences growing up in Hill House. As a child, Steve is a loving, caring older brother who is helpful around the house, from aiding his father in renovation efforts, to comforting his younger siblings when they are scared. As an adult, Steve deals with his past trauma by writing it down and publishing it as a novel, much to his siblings' chagrin. He is worn down by guilt and often comes off as inconsiderate, though he still cares about his family and doesn't want them to follow the same path as their mother or Nell.

Shirley Crain

Shirley is the second eldest child of the Crain family and is a mortician who runs her own funeral home. In the past, Shirley is shown to be protective of her siblings and to struggle with her own fears and anxieties. In the present, she is married with children but struggles with the guilt and trauma of her experiences at Hill House.

Theodora Crain

Theo is the middle child of the Crain family and works as a psychologist as an adult, living with her sister Shirley. She struggles with a heightened sensitivity which runs in the family - her mother and her grandma had the same powers. She can feel emotions from people, objects or places by touching them.

Luke Crain

Luke Crain is one of the youngest of the Crain children, and the twin of Eleanor Crain, Luke struggled throughout his life with a heroin addiction. Luke checked himself into numerous rehab centers over the years — including those paid for by Steven and Shirley — but relapsed each time.

Nell was the youngest child and third daughter of Hugh and Olivia Crain. She struggled during her childhood at Hill House with frequent sights of the Bent-Neck Lady. These sightings caused distress for the Crain family, who dismissed them as figments of Nell's imagination. They are, however, surprised when Nell reveals years later — now an adult — that the Bent-Neck Lady has returned.
